Web DM Podcast 246 Game Design Noob Wisdom

Hello DMNs! We hope you're having an awesome week. We are! Knock on wood, we're done working on Weird Wastelands until we see it all laid out, which will happen very shortly before it gets shared with the world! (A note: We will likely be announcing the day when preorders close soon, so if you haven't secured a print copy or other physical items and want to, now is the time)

To that end, we thought we'd answer a question we've been sitting on for a while and make it into a show: what we've learned about 5e game design so far, and what advice we have for those who wanna take the leap.

This is a rambly one, but we hope we convey a little of how much writing this book has meant to us and, while it was very hard work, it was very rewarding and we learned so much. Tell us what you think.

Time stamps:
12:46 - Kevin Davis: Have you ever converted normal magical items into 1st generation legendary or heirloom items? My players are going up against a “god” and I want to reward them not with replaceable loot, you found a +2 sword to replace that +1, but have their weapons, armor, and items transform into legendary or heirloom items. I’ve created a tier system so as they hit each level tier a new ability is unlocked. Your thoughts/experience?

23:13 - Declan: how are you guys gonna broadly tackle survival in weird wastelands and have you seen other games that have done survival well?

31:04 - Writing and Polishing D&D 5e Content!
