Web DM Podcast 248 - On Actual Plays

Hey there DMNs! We hope you're doing well on this lovely Friday! We've got more of an industry thinkpiece for y'all today on the pod, but not before we answer a couple of DM-facing questions. In the main topic, we ramble about liveplays, actual plays, livestreams, whatever you call them - people playing TTRPG and then sharing their game on the internet for other people to watch.

Curious about your thoughts on this one, as it's a frequent flyer of a topic for industry people to talk about, particularly whether or not it's viable as a way to work in gaming for most people and what people are actually looking to get out of them, and, tbh, it can be a it of a headscratcher even for people like us, who have done a whole heck of a lot of it. So if you enjoy the rambly ones, this is for you. We love ya, patrons. Thanks for being here with us.

Time stamps:
3:25 - Daniel: I recently started a new game and we added a few new players to the table. We are playing Basic Fantasy RPG, it’s everyone’s first Old School game. We are a few sessions in and we went through the Tomb of the Serpent King as a beginner dungeon since it teaches you all the old school lessons.

I enjoy it as the DM but none of them really enjoy the game system. They much prefer 5e, I know this because I asked. However I’m scared that if we go 5e in the campaign set up I have right now it won’t have the same effect as what I was going for, system matters! Should I just adjust my expectations and run 5e or start a new campaign entirely?

13:18 - Declan: How do you stay engaged or get reinvigorated with the baseline d&d fantasy?  I also just can't get past why certain races don't just rule the world? Like elves live so long, they don't seem to have any sort of fertility problem. Why aren't they running the world? Why are there so many races? Should they all have unique cultures?

28:24 - Main Topic: Livestreaming!
