Yeah Greg absolutely wrote the character for Rik, being a big fan of his, though his own father is also a big inspiration for it too. I think the casting makes sense too as Greg grew up in Shropshire, and Rik grew up in neighbouring Worcestershire. Both had that experience of growing up in the rural midlands, a stones throw from the Shropshire Hills.

It always disappoints me when some great comic is brought into a show and they're handed a character that could've been played by anyone. This character does not seem to be one of those.

Greg also plays the part better after a few episodes and grows into it, and there's some great chemistry with the other actors as it progresses... There's also a few massive surprises which I won't spoil as you go though the seasons.

The fact Rik Mayall is in the first series was enough for me to be hooked, but all the characters are excellent. It is a joy to watch and Greg Davies shows how to get laughs in so many situations.
