Disney Plus Drops Out of Top Five Streamers

It's huge news and investors really don't even know about it yet. Disney Plus has dropped out of the top five streamers, now beaten by Tubi. That means the top streaming platforms are:

1. YouTube
2. Netflix
3. Amazon Prime Video
4. Hulu
5. Tubi

It's a major change in entertainment. And frankly, I have to put a ton of blame on Kathleen Kennedy given the recent results of The Acolyte... not to mention Mandalorian Season 3.

One of the primary sources of criticism for Kathleen Kennedy involves her creative decisions and the overall direction of the Star Wars franchise. "The Last Jedi," directed by Rian Johnson, took stupid risks and subverted many traditional Star Wars tropes, which divided the fanbase. Annihilating Luke was like buying Batman to focus on Batgirl while throwing Bruce Wayne in a dumpster fire. It's the sort of stupid that boggles the mind.

Star Wars has one of the most passionate and vocal fanbases in popular culture. This intense fandom brings high expectations and scrutiny for anyone at the helm of the franchise. Kathleen Kennedy's tenure has seen a sharp divide among fans, with a very small minority embracing the new direction and others longing for the feel and style of the original trilogy. The small minority, however, isn't heavily invested in the franchise... they see it as a political cudgel.

Under Kennedy's leadership, several Star Wars film productions faced behind-the-scenes controversies. The firing of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from "Solo: A Star Wars Story" (2018) due to creative differences and their replacement with Ron Howard is a notable example. Similarly, the exit of directors Colin Trevorrow from "Episode IX" and Josh Trank from a standalone Star Wars project created an impression of instability and indecision.

These high-profile changes in directorial leadership raised concerns about Kennedy's management style and her ability to collaborate effectively with creative talent. Critics argue that such disruptions can undermine the creative process and lead to inconsistent storytelling.

Kathleen Kennedy, of course, also famously allowed Gina Carano to be fired in a highly-damaging manner. She may have been more involved. Instead of Gina, we have Leslye. That's who KK thinks is more representative of the public. I look forward to getting those discovery docs soon.

So perhaps we should consider that Kathleen Kennedy not only managed to destroy Star Wars, but she also destroyed Disney Plus. If Star Wars was putting out Mando S1-2 level quality twice a year, Disney Plus would be competing with Netflix. Instead, they're trying not to be topped by Roku.

At what point do you think Disney will make the right decision and remove the leadership, Kennedy being chief among them, that have poisoned the brand so badly? This can’t continue forever unless they’re willing to just sink the brand entirely.

I think the chaos at Lucasfilm along with the mediocre to terrible content put out by both Star Was and Marvel contributed to its loss. Any hype for D+ is gone.

This makes no sense. No sane CEO would stand by and permit Kathleen Kennedy to demolish what was once the most valuable IP in the world. The woman has to know where some bodies are buried. Nothing else explains Iger’s willingness to allow Lucasfilm to devolve into the dumpster fire it has become. Mercy Maud, the stock has dropped to below $100! What will it take for Iger to fire most everyone at the helm of Star Wars and Marvel? Perhaps he’ll luck out and Nelson Peltz will begin buying Disney stock again in preparation for another board seat challenge. At the moment that’s the only thing likely to drive the share price back up. 🤷🏼
