Patreon Exclusive: The End of the High Republic is Near
Added 2024-08-21 19:32:47 +0000 UTCWell, it was supposed to be a video coming out today... but for reasons I can't quite share, we're going to have to hold it. And, as a result, you get to be the first ones to know it.
According to a source (making this rumor and speculation), Disney is preparing to sunset The High Republic novels and merchandise over the next two years. My source tells me that there won't be much of an announcement, just a clearing out of already-purchased projects and products in the pipeline. Once their done, there will be no more effort into this particular part of Star Wars lore for the foreseeable future.
One of the things I'm working to find out is whether or not this was a package decision behind the scenes with the cancellation of The Acolyte. It seems likely to me, but I am purely pondering at this time.
The High Republic, despite being touted as a frequenter of the New York Times Best Sellers list (a meaningless trophy), has been a total failure for The Walt Disney Company. Harry Potter it is not. And it makes sense that they would be ready to close the shop, pull down the shades and let this thing fade out into oblivion. Where Star Wars goes next is likely to be determined by Dave Filoni, but I'm starting to hear rumors that even he is wearing out the good will of Disney execs. It may be time for major change at Lucasfilm. You and I know that was a decade ago... but Disney is starting to show signs that even they realize it in 2024.
