Final Cut: Autogynephilia

Hi all!

Here's the final version, at long last! Feel free to share far and wide.

Also, here's my pinned comment on my video, which explains why I decided to go ahead with this topic:

"I was initially reluctant to do a video on this topic in part because I worried that only a handful of trans women and TERFs would even care. Itโ€™s a video about the identity and sexuality of trans women, yes, but the debate around this topic touches on a lot of other issues that are of wide interest right now: political correctness, academic freedom, power, privilege, social justice, postmodernism. And I try to make connections to those debates in this video, so my hope is that even if youโ€™re not trans youโ€™ll still resonate with enough that itโ€™ll be worth watching for 50 minutes."

My other motivations for covering this include that a few months ago I managed to get myself in a lot of trouble (well, the kind of trouble you get into on Twitter anyway) when I did an interview with a journalist who has defended Dreger (who defended Bailey). So I'd already gotten myself tangled in this controversy.

The video is so long in part because I knew that most people probably wouldn't be familiar with the details of the theory or with the history of the controversy surrounding it, so I had to fill in a lot of backstory.

Also, I haven't done a video about trans topics since I started my transition (and we're now coming up on 6 months) so I'm bursting with things to say on the subject, and in fact I have to constantly restrain myself in order to keep this channel from becoming primarily a trans issues channel.

Anyway, thanks SO MUCH to those of you who gave kind and useful feedback on the rough edit last night. I hope you enjoy the final product!

Much <3

Natalie

Comments

Autogynephilia is like Freudian psychodynamic theories, not really science.

I vote very hard for a video talking about gender perception and the self in non-essentialist terms. Or just some reading recommendations if anyone's got any.
